Second Sunday after
Epiphany
Collect
Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant
that thy people, illumined by thy Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christ's
glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus
Christ our Lord, who with thee and the Holy Spirit liveth and reigneth, one God, now and for
ever. Amen.
First Lesson: Isaiah 42:1-9
"Here is my servant, whom I uphold,
my chosen one in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him
and he will bring justice to the nations.
He will not shout or cry out,
or raise his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.
In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;
he will not falter or be discouraged
till he establishes justice on earth.
In his law the islands will put their hope."
This is what God the LORD says--
he who created the heavens and stretched them out,
who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it,
who gives breath to its people,
and life to those who walk on it:
"I, the LORD, have called you in righteousness;
I will take hold of your hand.
I will keep you and will make you
to be a covenant for the people
and a light for the Gentiles,
to open eyes that are blind,
to free captives from prison
and to release from the dungeon those who sit in darkness."
"I am the LORD; that is my name!
I will not give my glory to another
or my praise to idols.
See, the former things have taken place,
and new things I declare;
before they spring into being
I announce them to you."
Psalm: 63:1-8
- O God, you are my God; eagerly I seek you; *
my soul thirsts for you, my flesh faints for you,
as in a barren and dry land where there is no water.
- Therefore I have gazed upon you in your holy place, *
that I might behold your power and your glory.
- For your loving-kindness is better than life itself; *
my lips shall give you praise.
- So will I bless you as long as I live *
and lift up my hands in your Name.
- My soul is content, as with marrow and fatness, *
and my mouth praises you with joyful lips,
- When I remember you upon my bed, *
and meditate on you in the night watches.
- For you have been my helper, *
and under the shadow of your wings I will rejoice.
- My soul clings to you; *
your right hand holds me fast.
Second Lesson: 1 Corinthians 6:11b-20
But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
"Everything is permissible for me"--but not everything is beneficial. "Everything is
permissible for me"--but I will not be mastered by anything. "Food for the stomach and the
stomach for food"--but God will destroy them both. The body is not meant for sexual
immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lord for the body. By his power God raised the Lord
from the dead, and he will raise us also. Do you not know that your bodies are members of
Christ himself? Shall I then take the members of Christ and unite them with a prostitute?
Never! Do you not know that he who unites himself with a prostitute is one with her in body?
For it is said, "The two will become one flesh." But he who unites himself with the Lord is one with him in spirit.
Flee from sexual immorality. All other sins a man commits are outside his body, but he who
sins sexually sins against his own body. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the
Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; you were
bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
Gospel: John 1:43-51
The next day Jesus decided to leave for Galilee. Finding Philip, he said to him, "Follow me."
Philip, like Andrew and Peter, was from the town of Bethsaida. Philip found Nathanael and told him, "We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote--Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph."
"Nazareth! Can anything good come from there?" Nathanael asked.
"Come and see," said Philip.
When Jesus saw Nathanael approaching, he said of him, "Here is a true Israelite, in whom there is nothing false."
"How do you know me?" Nathanael asked.
Jesus answered, "I saw you while you were still under the fig tree before Philip called you."
Then Nathanael declared, "Rabbi, you are the Son of God; you are the King of Israel."
Jesus said, "You believe because I told you I saw you under the fig tree. You shall see greater things than that." He then added, "I tell you the truth, you shall see heaven open, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man."
